A winter storm watch has been issued for Monroe and surrounding counties for Sunday evening through Monday afternoon. The National Weather Service in Buffalo said we could get 9 or more inches of snow and winds gusts up to 35 mph. Travel will be very difficult to impossible during the morning commute Monday, which is Martin Luther King Jr. Day, so schools, government offices and some businesses are closed. In addition, a wind chill advisory has been issued for Friday evening through Saturday afternoon. Wind chills as low as 20 degrees below zero are possible.

For more than 20 years, Rochester-area pet owners with sick animals needing emergency care in the middle of the night could find it at Veterinary Specialists and Emergency Services in Brighton. That changes Monday, Jan. 17, when the clinic will begin operating from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily instead of around the clock. A memo to VSES staff cited staffing shortages as the reason and particular difficulty finding people to work after hours or overnight shifts.
Another 1 million free at-home COVID tests will be distributed in Monroe County. The new stockpile, which will begin arriving next week, is in addition to the 750,000 tests the county gave out in December. County Executive Adam Bello said distribution plans, including times and locations, will be announced soon.
Three new tenants are coming to Eastview Mall. Pandora Jewelry, which had a shop in the mall from fall of 2010 to spring 2019, will open a store next month in the Dick’s House of Sport wing. Also come to that wing is activewear retailer OFFLINE by Aerie. And restaurant Adelita’s Mexican Cocino & Tequila is expected to open by the end of March in the old Bonefish Grill space.
