Milk tea and flavored snow: New Johnson County bubble tea shop offers over 130 choices

Columbia-based Bubblecup Tea Zone has opened its first shop in the Kansas City metro.

The new bubble tea shop, at 8331 W. 135th St. in Overland Park, seats about 15 people. The owners also hope to open a location in downtown Kansas City by the end of the year.

They offer more than 130 drink choices, including flavored brewed tea, fruit tea, classic milk tea, flavored milk tea, flavored slush, sea salt tea, and flavored snow (like a milkshake, they say). The shop also will have seasonal items such as pumpkin spice milk tea around Halloween.

Toppings include whipped cream, lychee jelly, pudding, vanilla ice cream, sea salt cream, and popping boba (strawberry, peach, mango or cherry).

They use select tea from Taiwan, brew it in spring water and add a touch of flavor or pure cane sugar. Then it is filtered.

The shops also have desserts including crepes.

The owners are from Taiwan and own two locations in Columbia, and two in the St. Louis area.

“I tried to bring something really authentic from Taiwan, to introduce our culture to the Midwest, but we also introduce the American culture with some infusions,” said Tzuyang Chao, partner with Kate Wang.
