Millburn High School Artist Earns High Score From College Board
MILLBURN, NJ — Michelle Qiu, a Millburn High School Senior, recently earned the highest possible score from College Board for her AP Drawing Portfolio, and one of her pieces has been featured in the College Board's 2020 Art and Design Exhibit.
Last year, as a junior, Qiu's AP Studio Art II class took on the challenge of developing a portfolio of work that addressed the new College Board AP Drawing requirements. The new curriculum pushes students to be exceptionally independent thinkers who make creative decisions as they experiment, reflect, revise and finalize their work.
When March 2020 came around, the students' challenge was further heightened when they suddenly found themselves having to complete the rigorous portfolio from home due to the COVID-19 Pandemic.
Michelle’s work was selected to be featured on the College Board website as a stellar example of a portfolio created for the new curriculum. It was also selected for their digital art museum, The Elective, as a representation of “some of the most engaging pieces created by AP Art students this year—because the art is as urgent as our times.”

Magazine and what's next
Michelle’s pandemic-themed art and art journal drawings were also selected to be featured on the cover, and in the interior, of New York's Mt. Sinai Hospital's Surge magazine. (https://issuu.com/luborges/docs/surge_2020_issue___2_summer

This year Michelle is continuing her creative endeavors as a member of the Art Consortium course at the high school.
She plans to submit her to the annual Scholastic Art competition.
