What do millennials & baby boomers have in common? They both move to Savannah, studies say

Both millennials and baby boomers are flocking to Savannah, according to two recent studies.

Smart Asset recently published rankings of cities where these age groups are most commonly moving. The hostess city of the South ranked No. 15 for the city that baby boomers moved to the most in 2022. According to Smart Asset, 3,644 boomers moved to Savannah, making 20% of the city's population in the baby boomer category.

Boomers, who are ages 55-74 and nearing or at retirement age, typically choose to move to cities that have comfortable weather and lower cost of living to better suit their new cash flows and routines. An appeal to those retirement-aged is nothing new for Savannah, which was also named one of Forbes's best places to retire in 2022.

Savannah was the only Georgia city in the top-20 listed for baby boomer move-ins. Atlanta ranked No. 30 and Macon ranked No. 35. Clearwater, Fla. was the overall most moved-to city for boomers, followed by Reno, Nev. at No. 2 and Orlando, Fla. at No. 3.

As for millennial move-ins, Savannah ranked No. 11 most moved-to city for millennials. More than 15,000 people aged 25-44 moved to the oldest city in Georgia in 2022, meaning millennials make up 33% of the population, according to the study.

The only Georgia city ranked higher than Savannah for millennials is Sandy Springs at No. 10.
