Millersport news: Alumni banquet coming up on May 27

The 94th Alumni Banquet of Millersport High School will be held at 6p.m. Saturday, May 27 in the Walnut Township District Auditorium. The dinner buffet will include two main entrees, two sides, salad, dessert and beverage. The cost of the meal is $20 per person. Checks should be made payable to Millersport Alumni Association and mailed to Carol King, 3226 Southbank Road, Millersport, Ohio, 43046. Please include the year of graduation on the memo line of your check. Reservations are due by May 20. Baccalaureate service

The Baccalaureate Service the Class of 2023 is being planned. The service will begin at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 17 at the Millersport United Methodist Church, 2310 Refugee Street, in Millersport. All are welcome to attend to honor the graduates.

Senior citizens

The Millersport Senior Citizens met May 5 at the Millersport Lions Club. President Ed Otte opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag. Opening prayer was offered by Nancy Davis. Members sang “God Bless America”. The 21 members present enjoyed Sloppy Joes as the main entrée for the potluck lunch. The Committee for the meeting were Anita Bailey, Carol Kitzmiller and Marty Holtz.

Following lunch, President Otte conducted the business meeting. John Hammel was recognized with a May birthday. Dave and Marty Holtz and Floyd and Helen Hart were recognized with May anniversaries. Several announcements were made for upcoming events. The Community Cares Day was to be held on Saturday. Little Miss Poppy, Hannah Hampson, would be passing out poppies at the Circle K on Saturday. Plans are being made for the annual Memorial Day Parade to begin at the strip mall on the north end of Millersport and proceed to the cemetery. Several members are selling Sweet Corn Festival Raffle Tickets. Mary Dupler ended the meeting with “Words of Wisdom”. Door Prizes were won by Carol King, Carolyn Ricketts, Richard Neff, Debbie Gant, Ed Otte, Bill Yates, Alice Graham, Marty Holtz, and Evelyn Worrell.

The next meeting of the club will be at noon Friday, May 19 at the Lions Clubhouse. Anyone who is 55 years of age and older is encouraged to join for fun, food and fellowship.

School activities

Band and choir students in grades 7 through 12 visited Ohio University-Lancaster to see “You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown."

Commander Dennis Lowe from the Central Ohio Major Crimes Unit and Scott Duff, the director of the Major Crimes Unit’s Outreach Program visited MHS to talk to students about making good choices and staying drug, alcohol and tobacco free.

Walnut Township Trustees

The Walnut Township Trustees met May 2 in the township office. Trustee Chairman Yates opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance. Fairfield County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Burke was present to discuss issues in the area and listen to any complaints or comments of the residents in attendance.

The Road Repairs 2023 Bid Opening was held.

The minutes and financial reports were approved. The final invoice for the North Walnut Conveyance Study was approved for payment. A resolution was passed for the Walnut Township Fire Department OP&F retirement pick up.

Several township residents expressed their concerns about the solar power issue.

Township Department Reports were given. Walnut Township Fire Department Chief Robert Price reported on April run totals, the closure of State Route 204, staffing, the successful “Drug Take Back Day”, and equipment status. Chief Price also shared a “Thank You” letter the department received from a man who credited the department with saving his life after a boating accident.

Regional Planning Commission Representative Robert W. Slater II, reported on the solar issue recommendations made by the Commission.

Mike Berry, Zoning Inspector, reported on the number of permits issued, letters, variance hearing, and the 95 phone calls he returned.

A written report was submitted by Property Inspector Kelly Smith.

Parks Supervisor Nathan Wagner reported on the Nature Works Grant for Lieb’s Island park and the obligation of funds. Nathan also reported as Roads Supervisor on berm work, culverts to be addressed, mowing, and repairs to the dump truck.

Items of old business included plans for the salt barn, the North Walnut Storm Water Project, progress on boat dock renewals for 2023, “No Parking” signs, and hazards in township right-of-ways.

Items of New Business included accepting the Road Bid from Shelly and Company, economic development, property maintenance, and the Luke Bryan Concert on September 15, 2023.

The next meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 6.
