Millersport news: Buckeye Lake Area Star-Spangled Tradition returns July 3

BLASST, the Buckeye Lake Area Star-Spangled Tradition will be held on Monday, July 3. Seed money was provided by the John W. Wolfe Estate. With the help of local businesses and community support, BLASST is able to continue. Anyone who would consider donating may send a check to BLASST, P. O. Box 1524, Buckeye Lake, Ohio, 43008.

The theme of this year’s 4th of July Boat Parade sponsored by the Buckeye Lake Area Civic Association will be Buckeye Lake: American Jukebox Jamboree. The parade will begin at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 4 at Lieb’s Island and travel along the north bank. All are invited to decorate their boats following the “American Jukebox” theme of a favorite band and patriotic displays.

This year’s prizes will be for Most Patriotic - $200 Award sponsored by the Buckeye Lake Chamber of Commerce, Most Creative - $200 Award sponsored by the Buckeye Lake Area Civic Association, and People’s Choice $200 Award sponsored by Marnita Swickard and Michelle Blizzard of eMerge Real Estate. Senior citizens

The Millersport Senior Citizens met at noon Friday, June 16, at the Millersport Lions Clubhouse. Twenty-three members were welcomed by President Ed Otte who led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag and singing “America." Nancy Davis offered prayer before the potluck lunch. The June Kitchen Committee were John and Ruthanne Hammel.

Following lunch President Otte conducted the business meeting. Members who were having health issues were remembered. A discussion was held on ideas for a summer outing with the possibility of going to Amish Country for the last meeting in July. The July Kitchen Committee are Rosie Brookover, Vivian Crist and Mary Sue Slater. The club will provide ham loaf as the main entrée for the July 7th potluck lunch. Door prizes were won by Marty Holtz, Debbie Gant, Mary Dupler, Judy Harris, Carol King, Alice Graham, Carol Kitzmiller, Hannah Hampson, Mary Sue Slater, Rosie Brookover, Anita Bailey, Karen Mosher, Liz Sanders, Vivian Crist, Dave Holtz, Evelyn Worrell, Richard Neff, Floyd Hart and John Hammel.

The next meeting will be held at noon Friday, July 7 at the Lions Clubhouse on Chautauqua Boulevard in Millersport. Anyone who is 55 years of age and older is encouraged to join for fun, food and fellowship.

Walnut Township Schools

The Walnut Township Local School District Board of Education met in regular session at 6:00 p.m. Monday, June 12th in the Laker Learning Center of Millersport High School. Caleb Stout, Music Teacher, was recognized for his work with student musicals and choir events. Spring Sports Award winners were recognized:

Kim Yenni, elementary principal, reported on end-of-the-year activities, summer school, and an update on the coming pre-school. Megan Terry, junior/senior high school principal, sent a written report. The Instructional and Curricular Programs Committee reported they had met concerning possible changes to the grading scale. The Extra/Co-Curricular; Health and Safety Committee reported on discussion on the Athletic Handbook. Superintendent Kim Radulovich gave a legislative update and an update on summer school and summer work projects.

The following Superintendent’s Recommendations were approved:

  • Contract/MOUs with Fairfield County Educational Service Center for 2023-2024 for AESOP, Classrooms-Preschool/School Age Special Education, Adapted PE, Physical & Occupational Therapy, Success Center, Attendance Officer, Gifted Coordinator, Special Education Supervisor, Speech Therapist and School Psychologist.

  • Facility Use Agreement with the Midwest Marlins

  • Facility Usages for T-Ball, Softball, Volleyball Camp, Basketball camps for boys and girls, football, Millersport Community Theatre and Midwest Marlins.

  • Telephone Services policy

  • Interscholastic Extracurricular Eligibility policy

  • Disposal of various surplus items

  • Purchase of 60 Chromebooks

  • Donations from PTO, Poole & Kent Co., Author Mark Walter, Marlowe Brainard Funds at Fairfield County Foundation.

  • MOU with Fairfield County ESC to use InnevAto EDU online classes

  • 2023-2024 Millersport Junior/Senior High School Student Handbook, Athletic Handbook, Elementary Student Handbook

The following Superintendent’s Personnel Recommendations were approved:

  • Teacher of Record staff stipends for 2023 summer school – Michelle Peters, Greg Hines, Deb Cassady, Ashley Lawson, John Phipps, Tom Howard, Tyler Coward, Joe Brownfield, Sarah Reed, Cooper Vest, Sharon Lawrence, Michelle Neely and Leslie Osterman.

  • Lindsey Little – Special Educational Aide

  • Nancy Augsberger – to support students grades 9-12 conducting summer school online

  • Supplemental contracts for: Laura Phillips and Heather Metcalf – Elementary Student Council, Cooper Vest – Golf Coach, Tyler Coward – Head Boys Basketball, Tom Howard – Assistant Boys Basketball

  • Stipends for Laura Phillips and Cheryl Turner for Right-to-Read Week

  • Supplemental Contracts for non-certified: Randall Lucas Hannan – Assistant Football Coach, Creighton Mike Miller – Head Girls Basketball, Thomas Jason Hartman – Assistant Girls Basketball

Discussion was held on asphalt repairs of high school parking lot.

The board entered into executive session to consider the investigation of charges or complaints against a student.
