Millersport news: Cruisin' on the Commons this Friday

The Millersport Sweet Corn Festival Committee will host Cruisin’ on the Commons from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 18 at the Millersport Lions Park, Home of the Sweet Corn Festival. Registration of $10 will run from 5 to 7 p.m. for cars, trucks and motorcycles. Winners will be determined by Cruiser’s Choice for one pre ’72, one ’73 to ’99, and one 2000 or newer vehicle. Come out for lots of fun with trophies, music, food, door prizes and 50/50 drawing. For more information call 614-562-1919 or 740-953-1521. Proceeds will benefit Millersport Lions-supported charities.

Memorial service

A Memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 19 at the Millersport Methodist Church for Donald Anderson. Don was a 1967 graduate of Millersport High School. All are welcome to attend.

Tour de Buckeye Lake

Bike Buckeye Lake presents the annual fundraising event, the Annual Tour de Buckeye Lake with three main routes of 11 miles, 28 miles, and 63 miles. There are also 40 and 50-mile optional routes. The event will be held from 7:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 19 at the Millersport Lions grounds, 2905 Chautauqua Boulevard, Millersport. Ride around the lake via the path along the dam, scenic neighborhoods, and farm roads.

Market Day

The Millersport Community Market Day will be held from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 19 at Mathias Miller Park, Lancaster Street in Millersport. Stop by and shop local artisans, crafters, non-profits, produce and more.

Yard sale

The Eastern Stars will hold a Yard Sale at the Millersport Methodist Church, 2310 Refugee Road, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 25 and 26. There will be hot dogs, sloppy joes, chips, cookies and drinks for sale as well as homemade salsa. Come out and find that one thing you have been looking for.

Senior citizens

The Fairfield Beach Senior Citizens met Aug. 9 at the American Legion Hall on Canal Drive in Millersport. Fourteen members were welcomed by President Carol Kitzmiller, opening with the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag. Mary Dupler led the group in singing “America”. Ken Keener offered a prayer before the potluck lunch.

President Kitzmiller conducted the business meeting. Mary Dupler and Bill Yates were recognized with August birthdays. There will be a White Elephant Sale at the September meeting. Door prizes were won by Ken Keener, Rosie Brookover, Carolyn Ricketts, Bill Yates, Nancy Davis, Anita Bailey, John Hammel, Carol King, and Richard Neff. The meeting was adjourned for Bingo.

Public hearing

The Walnut Township Trustees held a public hearing on a zoning district change application on Aug. 1, at the township building. The application was submitted by the trustees. The property proposed to be rezoned is located behind 11420 Millersport Road. The Trustees are requesting a rezoning district change from Rural Residential District to General Industrial District for 2.01 acres from the 6.28-acre parcel.

Bid opening

The Walnut Township Trustees held a public bid opening for a new Salt Storage Facility on Aug. 8. Following the bid opening the trustees reviewed the bids with the Township’s Architect, reviewed funding, reviewed project costs, and reviewed other details.

Walnut Township Trustees

The Walnut Township Trustees met Aug. 1 in the township office. A deputy from the Fairfield County Sheriff’s office was in attendance to answer questions of those present. The minutes and financial reports were approved.

Township Department reports were given. Walnut Township Fire Chief Price reported that the department had 122 runs for the month of July. He also reported on equipment issues, bids, and building repairs at Station 1 and Station 3.

Zoning Inspector Mike Berry reported on permits, letters, violations, short-term rentals, citations and phone calls for the month of July.

Nathan Wagner, Roads Supervisor, reported on mowing, road resurfacing, equipment needs, and surplus items.Items of old business discussed were:

  • Salt barn facility bids

  • North Walnut Township Storm Water Phase I

  • Community Funding Grant status

  • BLRC/Walnut Township logo/identity, signage

  • Bike Buckeye Lake signage update

  • County Land use plan

  • Community Safe Room – Tornado Shelter update, bid date

Items of new business included:

  • Zoning District change RR to I-2 application by the Trustees – The Township Salt Barn Facility hearing was held at 6:30 p.m. prior to this meeting. The zoning change was approved

  • Zoning resolution amendment to regulate energy systems application by the Trustees. The hearing was held July 19, 2023 at 6:00 p.m. The Resolution was approved.

Additional comments from the floor were made on solar fields, road issues, and concert traffic.
