Millersport news: Cruisin' on the Commons this Friday

The first Cruisin’ on the Commons of the season will be held at the Millersport Lions Park, Home of the Sweet Corn Festival from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday. Registration will run from 5 to 7 p.m. The registration fee for cars, trucks and motorcycles is $10. Winners will be determined by Cruiser’s Choice for one pre-1972, one 1973 to 1999, and 2000 and newer. All are invited to come out and enjoy the fun, trophies, music and food. There will be door prizes and a 50/50 drawing. The event is hosted by the Millersport Sweet Corn Festival Committee. Proceeds will benefit Millersport Lions-supported charities. Senior Citizens

The Fairfield Beach Senior Citizens met May 11 in the American Legion Hall with 21 members present. Following lunch, President Carol Kitzmiller called the business meeting to order. Marty and Dave Holtz were recognized for their wedding anniversary. The itinerary for the June 8 trip was discussed. The group will visit the Baltimore Museum before traveling to the Olde Dutch Restaurant for lunch. There will be time for shopping at the antique mall, craft shop, glass shop, and other attractions near the restaurant. The meeting ended with humorous readings by Mary Dupler. Door prizes were won by Ron Pairan, Dave Holtz, Cathy Ralston, Richard Neff, Carol Kitzmiller, Liz Sanders, Karen Mosher, Pam Ricketts, and Carolyn Ricketts. The group enjoyed playing Bingo following the meeting.

Commencement

Millersport High School will hold commencement exercises for the Class of 2022 at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 22 in the District Auditorium, 11850 Lancaster Street in Millersport. Senior exams will be taken Tuesday, May 17 through Thursday, May 19. Graduation practice will be held on Friday morning, followed by the annual Senior Picnic and the Senior Slideshow.

Board of Education

The Walnut Township Board of Education met Monday, May 9 in the Laker Learning Center of Millersport High School. The minutes, Treasurers’ Report, bills, the Five-Year Forecast and capital plan were approved. A transfer from the General Fund to the PI Fund was approved for the HVAC project. A Memorandum of Agreement for Deposit of Public Funds with Commodore Bank was approved.

Elementary Principal Kim Yenni reported on the Spring Choir concert, Junior Olympics, 6th Grade Breakfast, 2nd Grade State Fair, Talent Show, Read-With-Me and Math parties, and the annual 6th Grade “Clap-Out”.

Megan Terry, Junior/Senior High School Principal reported on State Testing, ODNR Boater Education, Students of the Month for April, upcoming end-of-the-year activities, and Mrs. Peters taking students to vote. Terry thanked Tena Singleton for a wonderful Prom and After-Prom, and Mrs. Dupler and Mrs. Workman for the Junior High Dance. She also thanked the board of education, PTO, Mrs. Bradford and Mr. Kirby for everything that was done for Staff Appreciation Week.

Superintendent Will Kirby reported on work projects, Safety Grant training for threat assessment, Summer School, newsletter schedule, and attendance at the Career Center and Vocational School graduations.

The board accepted the resignation of William Kirby, superintendent, effective at the end of the 2021-2022 contract year on July 31, 2022.

A contract with New Horizons was approved.

Discussion was held on Sunshine Law Training and the income tax levy before the board voted to enter into Executive Session to consider the employment or compensation of a public employee or official. No action was to follow.
