Millersport news: Lions Club remembers 'The Can Man' Sandy Wright

The Lions Club is saddened by the death of one of the Sweet Corn Festival’s loyal and dedicated officers on Jan. 7. Lion Sandy Wright remained active and involved until his health declined several years ago. Lion Sandy joined the Millersport Lions Club in April of 1977 and at the time of his death he was the Lion with the longest years of service in the club. He was sponsored by his sister’s father-in-law Harold McCafferty. He was a Life Member. He served as the club’s Tail Twister for five years and it was never a dull moment when he was collecting fines from members. He also managed the Lions Clubhouse for four years. He served the Sweet Corn Festival as Gates Chair from 1989 – 1993 and then as Assistant Gates/Parking Chair from 1994 – 2019. Sandy was known locally as “The Can Man”. He diligently showed up after events to remove bags of aluminum cans to take to recycling. He was an environmentalist long before it was fashionable. He will be missed dearly.

The next Sweet Corn Festival meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 28 in the Lions Clubhouse. The focus of the meeting will be clubhouse improvements, Summer Work Teams and the Founders’ Commons Stage.

The Lions Club recently took possession of a new Massey-Ferguson Tractor with a bucket lift attached. The Festival Committee has accepted an offer to purchase the old John Deere tractor and also authorized the sale of the Massey-Ferguson Tractor. Both tractors were declared surplus. Both tractors are over 50 years old and are in running condition. The club still has a large surplus of landscaping blocks available free to anyone if they will haul them away.
