Milton's interim school superintendent is candidate for job in Melrose

MILTON − Interim School Superintendent Garth McKinney is one of three finalists for the job of Melrose school superintendent.

McKinney is scheduled to be interviewed by the Melrose School Committee on Wednesday night.

A resident of North Reading, McKinney joined the Milton schools July 1 as assistant school superintendent for curriculum and human resources. He became interim superintendent Feb. 6, following the departure of Interim School Superintendent Janet Sheehan.

Incoming school leader Peter Burrows, currently head of the Addison Central School District in Vermont, is set to start work July 1.

Before coming to Milton, McKinney was interim superintendent of the Nashua, New Hampshire, schools.

McKinney has worked for more than two decades in education and was the assistant principal of an elementary school and Nashua's assistant school superintendent for elementary education. In 2013, he was named New Hampshire Teacher of the Year by the New Hampshire Council of Teachers of English.

He holds a doctorate in education from Boston College, a master's in education from Fordham University and a bachelor's in elementary education from Stonehill College.

Melrose has 3,849 public school students, compared with Milton's 4,321, according to the state Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.

The other finalists for the Melrose job are Tim Piwowar, a 26-year veteran of the Billerica schools and the system's superintendent since 2012; and David Ryan, who is in his fifth and final year as superintendent of the Exeter, New Hampshire, schools.
