Milton's interim school superintendent withdraws from consideration for Melrose job

MILTON − Interim School Superintendent Garth McKinney has taken himself out of consideration for the job of school superintendent in Melrose. He was one of three finalists.

The Melrose School Committee's first choice for the job, Billerica School Superintendent Tim Piwowar, withdrew from consideration after he was offered the job.

Melrose School Committee Chair Margaret Driscoll said at Monday's meeting that Piwowar told her the job "wasn't the right fit for him at the time."

Dorothy Presser, of the Massachusetts Association of School Committees, who was a consultant on the superintendent search, said she then talked to the two remaining candidates: McKinney and Exeter, New Hampshire, School Superintendent David Ryan. She said both were asked if they would accept the job if offered.

"I got a negative answer from Dr. McKinney," Presser said.

McKinney has been interim school superintendent since February. He joined the Milton schools as assistant superintendent for curriculum and human resources July 1. He had been interim school superintendent for the Nashua, New Hampshire, schools.
