Milwaukee Comptroller Aycha Sawa not seeking a second term in April 2024

Milwaukee Comptroller Aycha Sawa announced Tuesday that she isn't running for a second term.

She was first elected to the position as the city's chief financial officer in 2020 after holding the deputy position for three years of the 10 she had served in the Comptroller’s Office.

In a statement, Sawa said she was proud of her office's work under her leadership.

That included "managing and leading through the thick of the pandemic to fighting for the city’s fiscal health," she said in the statement.

She also cited the office's work navigating the passage of the new local government funding law known as Act 12 and the subsequent 2% city sales tax enacted by the Common Council and Mayor Cavalier Johnson.

Her office has estimated that the city will receive $184 million from the sales tax next year. It goes into effect Jan. 1, 2024.

The office is on the ballot in the April 2, 2024, election. A primary, if needed, will be held on Feb. 20, 2024.
