A Milwaukee man died in a single-car crash in South Milwaukee

A 23-year-old Milwaukee man was found dead after crashing in South Milwaukee early Wednesday morning.

Cudahy Police were pursuing a vehicle at 3:14 a.m., March 22 on East Layton Avenue, according to a release from Cudahy Police Chief Tom Poellot. The pursuit lasted 3.4 miles and reached 100 mph but was terminated due to the speed and officers losing sight of the vehicle in South Milwaukee.

“The initial reason for the pursuit was speeding, unsafe lane deviation, and improper display of registration,” Poellot said.

South Milwaukee Police found the vehicle about 40 minutes later involved in a single car crash near North Chicago and Rawson avenues.

There were no other occupants in the vehicle.

South Milwaukee resident Candace Busch said she woke up and opened her bedroom blinds to see authorities investigating the crash. She could see someone on the bank of the creek covered in a sheet. She said she didn't hear the crash.

"(I was) Looking out my bedroom window and said a prayer for this person's family," she posted on Facebook.

The area has been taped off. The South Milwaukee Police Department said just before 6 a.m. to “avoid the area of Hawthorne and N. Chicago Ave for the next few hours for a crash investigation.”
