The Milwaukee Public Museum has begun packing for its move to a new building

The Milwaukee Public Museum's much-anticipated move is underway.

This month, collection staff at the museum began packing objects in their collections to prepare for the museum's eventual move out of its home at 800 W. Wells St. to a new building at the northeast corner of Sixth and McKinley streets.

The first round of packing will consist of 23,000 glass and ceramic items from MPM's History collections, including items like vases, teapots, sugar dishes, creamers, teacups, saucers, plates, platters, serving dishes, salt cellars, and figurines, the museum said in a news release. The objects are inorganic and can therefore be in storage for an extended amount of time without jeopardizing their safety.

A portion of the logged and barcoded Milwaukee Public Museum’s British ceramics collection are organized on a table before being logged in and packed at the Milwaukee Public Museum in Milwaukee in preparation for move to the new museum, on Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2024. Once the packing of priceless artifacts takes place, they are loaded onto trucks and moved either to a secure, off-site storage facility or to the future museum, set to open in 2027.

The items packed Tuesday will either eventually be taken to the new museum or a secure, off-site storage facility.

All items currently being packed have been in storage at the museum, according to the release. The new museum is expected to open in 2026.
