Milwaukee's second marijuana-themed 'toasted sandwich' shop to open in Bay View

Cheba Hut, a marijuana-themed toasted sandwich shop, is expected to open its second Milwaukee location in Bay View later this year.

According to food and liquor applications, the newest "joint” will open Oct. 1 at 2022 S Kinnickinnick Ave., on the first floor of Vue Apartments. The location previously housed Red Brick Pizza.

This is the second location for owners Robert Huhn and Heather Huhn, who opened the first Milwaukee location near in the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee last July. The Bay View location will be the third such shop in Wisconsin; the first Cheba Hut opened in Madison in 2013.

Cheba Hut was started by a former Arizona State University student who saw a need for late-night food delivery, especially one that catered to college-aged students. Today, there are over 43 shops in 14 states.

The first shop opened in 1998 in Tempe, Arizona and features 30 toasted subs along with sweet “Treats” such as Rice Krispies bars and savory “munchies” like garlic cheese bread and pretzel nuggets, according to the shop’s website.

Keeping with the theme, sandwiches are named after marijuana strains. There’s the Chronic, a BBQ Roast beef sandwich or the Magic Mushroom, a vegetarian Teriyaki mushroom sandwich. Drinks are called “Cottonmouth Cures” and include Kool aid and fountain drinks.

The Bay View location will also serve beer, liquor and wine, according to the liquor application. None of the menu items contain marijuana.
