Mindhunter producer David Fincher has provided fans with an update on season three – but it's not looking good.

The true-crime thriller first premiered on Netflix back in 2017 and followed FBI agents Holden Ford (Jonathan Groff) and Bill Tench (Holt McCallany) as they pioneered profiling techniques in an attempt to get inside the minds of serial killers.

Season two wasn't far behind, dropping on the streamer in 2019. But since then, a third outing has become increasingly more unlikely.

Now, Fincher has pretty much confirmed that season three probably won't be happening – and he says that money and views (or lack thereof) are to blame.

"I’m very proud of the first two seasons. But it’s a very expensive show and, in the eyes of Netflix, we didn’t attract enough of an audience to justify such an investment," he said in a recent interview with Le Journal du Dimanche.

The producer continued: "I don’t blame them, they took risks to get the show off the ground, gave me the means to do Mank the way I wanted to do it, and they allowed me to venture down new paths with The Killer.

"It’s a blessing to be able to work with people who are capable of boldness. The day our desires are not the same, we have to be honest about parting ways."

It's a shame too, as director Andrew Dominik previously opened up about some exciting plans for another season.

"What they were going to do with season three was they were going to go [to] Hollywood," he told Collider back in April. "So one of them was going to be hooking up with Jonathan Demme and the other one was going to be hooking up with Michael Mann.

"And it was all going to be about profiling making it into the sort of zeitgeist, the public consciousness. That was the season everyone was really waiting for to do, with when they sort of get out of the basement and start."

Mindhunter seasons one and two are streaming on Netflix.
