From Cosmopolitan

Great news, Mindhunter fans! If you were gripped by the first series of the crime drama (and how the hell could you not have been?!), then you’ll be chuffed to know season two is very much a thing that's happening. Here's everything you might want to know about the series before you binge-watch it, from plot lines to the cast members et all.

Mindhunter season 2 release date

PSA: Mindhunter season 2 drops on Netflix today [16 August 2019]! The entire series was released at midnight California time, as this is where Netflix’s headquarters are based, meaning you can watch it on Netflix in the UK from 8am BST today.

This comes as executive producer David Fincher previously revealed on KCRW's The Treatment podcast, that Mindhunter season will air on Netflix on 16th August 2019, while Charlize Theron, let slip in May to radio host Howard Stern that: "Season 2 is coming out in August. Yeah, can't wait. Deep, dark... it's wonderful."

What’s Mindhunter about?

The show is set in the 70s, and follows FBI agent Holden Ford and his buddy Bill Tench as they travel around America interviewing some of the most depraved serial killers of the time in an attempt to understand why killers do what they do. Holden is based on real-life FBI agent, John E. Douglas.

No word from Netflix on whether that's actually true or not, mind you...

Which real-life serial killers will feature in Mindhunter season 2?

Well, we know for sure that Charles Manson will feature. And we're still fairly certain that the unnamed killer that pops up throughout season 1 will make an appearance. This guy works for ADT, and is shown at the start of seven episodes. He's based on a real murderer known as the 'BTK Killer', whose real name is Dennis Rader.

We also know that as well as Charles Manson, John E. Douglas also spoke to John Wayne Gacy, and 'Son of Sam' David Berkowitz during his time as an FBI agent, and after seeing those first-look images, we now know for sure he's in season 2. We also know from those images that William Pierce Jr will feature.

Mindhunter season 2 cast

Mindhunter season one stars Jonathan Groff and Holt McCallany as Holden and Bill, and Holden's ladyfriend Debbie is played by Hannah Gross, but there's currently no word from Netflix on whether the original cast will be back for the second series.

According to Collider, Justified actor Damon Herriman has been cast as Manson in the next series of Mindhunter, and filmed his scenes for the show back in July - which is particularly interesting, since he has also been confirmed to play Manson in Quentin Tarantino's film on the Sharon Tate murders, Once Upon A Time In Hollywood. Netflix have declined to comment on the news.

He was the leader of a cult who were - it's widely believed - brainwashed, and as a result, murdered pregnant actress Sharon Tate. Tex Watson - the man who was the leader of the group of Manson followers who murdered Sharon, Jay Sebring, Wojciech Frykowski, Abigail Folger, Gary Hinman, Leno & Rosemary La Biance, Steven Parent, and Donald Shea - will also be portrayed in season 2 of Mindhunter.

Mindhunter fan theories

A number of viewers have suggested that Jonathan's character Holden is in fact a sociopath himself. However, the man himself has put an end to that exciting fan theory.

"Everyone has said to me after they watch the show that they thought the character was a sociopath," he told Vulture. "And I had no idea! No idea... So many of my friends texted me, saying, 'OK, so when are you gonna start killing people?'

"I think the thing that they are aligning with... that I think is very similar, that we start to see more and more in our characters is this characteristic of narcissism and becoming self-obsessed."
