We have plenty of theories as to where season three of Mindhunter may go, but we'll be mulling over them for some time if a recent update from the show's star is to be believed.

We already had our suspicions of a sizeable gap between seasons two and three of the Netflix series, but now The Hollywood Reporter has appeared to confirm that Holden Ford and Bill Tench (and Wendy Carr) are on somewhat of a sabbatical.

An interview with Jonathan Groff, who plays the ever-brooding FBI agent Holden Ford, revealed a disappointing update on the crime drama, which is said to be "on hold".

The reason for Mindhunter hitting the indefinite pause button lies in creator David Fincher's latest project for Netflix, a biopic centred on Citizen Kane screenwriter Herman Mankiewicz.

His first feature film since 2014's Gone Girl – and the planned follow-up to The Game –is black-and-white picture Mank, starring Gary Oldman and written by Fincher's late father Jack.

On the topic of fathers, Mindhunter's Holt McCallany recently admitted that his experiences with his own dad informed the way he played Holt as the special agent slowly started to splinter from his wife and son.

At the end of season two, Bill Tench returns to Washington after working on the Atlanta Child Murders, only to discover that his family home lies empty. "I based those scenes on my own dad," he explained.

"He was a man of that era. In some of the ways [he] was an absent father in the way Bill is an absent father... [My mother] eventually left him without a word."

Mindhunter seasons 1 and 2 are now available to stream on Netflix.
