Mindhunter star Holt McCallany has shared a hopeful update on the future of the crime thriller series.

Fans' hopes for a third season were crushed last February after producer David Fincher seemingly confirmed that Netflix had cancelled the show, citing production costs and viewing figures as the reason.

However, McCallany – who played FBI Agent Bill Tench in the show – has now given a hopeful update regarding a potential third Mindhunter season, telling Awards Daily that Fincher is considering reviving the show.

"I've heard that David's thought about it. I'm not saying it's going to come back. But what I am saying is that if it comes back, I'm coming back with it," the actor explained.

"You can take that to the bank, but it'll depend on what David wants to do."

However, McCallany was quick to acknowledge that a series revival was "unlikely" due to the amount of time that's passed since season two's 2019 release, but he lives in hope.

"It's been a few years now, so it's probably unlikely, but just even that he would think about it is a hopeful sign," he added.

Mindhunter is based off of John E. Douglas and Mark Olshaker's true crime book of the same name and starred McCallany and Jonathan Groff as FBI agents who worked alongside psychologist Wendy Carr (Anna Torv) as she profiled imprisoned series killers in order to gain a better understanding of their minds.

Originally premiering back in 2017, Mindhunter returned for a second outing in 2019 before Netflix placed the show on indefinite hold in 2020 (via TVLine).

Giving an update on the show in February 2023, Fincher told Le Journal du Dimanche: "I'm very proud of the first two seasons. But it's a very expensive show and, in the eyes of Netflix, we didn't attract enough of an audience to justify such an investment.

"It's a blessing to be able to work with people who are capable of boldness. The day our desires are not the same, we have to be honest about parting ways."

Mindhunter seasons one and two are streaming on Netflix.
