It's not every day that an actor is given the opportunity to portray Charles Manson, but Damon Herriman has now taken on the infamous role not once, but twice.

As well as playing an incarcerated Manson in 1980 for Netflix's Mindhunter, Damon also plays the cult leader in Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Both of his appearances are memorable but brief.

While speaking to Entertainment Weekly about what it was like playing Manson at two very different parts of his life, Damon stated that his work on Tarantino's latest had much more of a light and fun tone than his incarcerated take on Manson in Mindhunter.

Reflecting on the "fairly evident" tonal differences between the two roles, Damon said he thought Tarantino's depiction of the notorious criminal was all about keeping him an "ominous figure who you just get a glimpse of but you don't get to know at all".

While the climax of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and how it connects to Charles Manson can't be discussed without venturing into spoiler territory, Manson's role in Mindhunter's second season is a less pivotal one.

Although agents Holden Ford and Bill Tench continue their research for the FBI's Behavioural Science Unit by interviewing high-profile serial killers, the drama's main focus is on the real-life Atlanta child murders, carried out in Georgia between 1979 and 1981.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is out now in cinemas, while Mindhunter is available to stream on Netflix.
