Mineral Lake Lions Den Campground to host star party Saturday

Aug. 4—The Mineral Lake Lions Club and the Tacoma Astronomical Society (TAS) will host a public star party at the Mineral Lake Lions Den Campground on Saturday, Aug. 5.

This event is free and open to the public.

"People of all ages and backgrounds, including and especially children, are welcome," organizers state in a news release.

This event will offer attendees the opportunity to view the sky through telescopes and to interact with experienced, knowledgeable astronomers and with other participants who may have limited or minimal understanding of astronomy, according to organizers.

"A typical star party gathering features observing through at least two or more different types of telescopes provided by TAS members along with the opportunity to ask questions, to discuss the observation process, and to learn about many astronomical topics: solar system objects, deep space objects, constellations, types of telescopes, and any other topic of interest," organizers stated in a release.

If weather turns out to be unfavorable for observing, a cancellation notice for the affected star party will be posted on the event's Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/events/690125262957388 and on both the Mineral Lake Lions Den and Mineral Lake Lions Den Campground Facebook pages at least two hours before the event's scheduled 6 p.m. start time.

The event is scheduled to run for four hours, ending at 10 p.m.

"Anyone planning to attend a star party should always check these pages for possible notice of cancellation before traveling to the star party," organizers stated, adding, "Even if the weather seems ideal, bringing mosquito repellent, a warm coat and possibly a warm drink is always a good idea."
