Minivan passenger killed in head-on collision with Dearborn school bus

A woman is dead after the minivan she was riding in smashed head-on into a Dearborn Public Schools bus near Ann Arbor Trail and Warren Avenue, not far from the Michael Berry Career Center.

The accident, which occurred Thursday morning, happened when the minivan's driver went into the oncoming lane, colliding with the bus, said David Mustonen, school district spokesman. The bus driver was not injured and neither was the driver of the minivan. A female passenger of the minivan was killed on impact, according to Mustonen.

The victim's name has not been released.

No students were on the bus at the time. The bus had just dropped students off and was on its way to pick up more students. Another bus was dispatched immediately to pick up the remaining students.

"We'll await the outcome of the investigation from the place for any final determination," Mustonen said. " But as it appears, the vehicle that hit our bus was traveling in the wrong direction, in the other lane. Like I said, we'll wait for the official outcome of a police investigation but at this point, it appears that this is just a very tragic and horrible accident that our bus happened to be involved.

"We're just very sorry to hear the outcome (of) the passenger of the car that struck our bus, our thoughts and prayers go out to that individual's family," he said. "This is not a good situation, no matter what the outcome is, who's at fault here, that's not important right now. What's important right now is that somebody lost their life today, that's really where our focus is right now and our attention is right now."

The investigation is ongoing.
