Minnehaha County gets 4 applications for first and only marijuana dispensary

Four applicants are in the running for Minnehaha County's first and only medical cannabis dispensary license.

At Tuesday's county commission meeting, county auditor Ben Kyte briefed the board on timeline for reviewing the applications. Last Friday, a lottery was held to choose the order in which applications will be considered.

The four applications came from Genesis Farm LLC, GFV Speciality Retail LLC and two from Shangri-La SD, LLC. The county has 60 days to review the applications to determine if they meet the requirements of the county's marijuana ordinance.

If approved, the dispensary will be the first in the county since medical marijuana became legal in South Dakota this past summer.

The review process is expected to end as late as Feb. 15.

When the 60-day review period ends, the highest ranked order from the lottery selection process, compliant with county ordinance, will come before the commission for final discussion and approval.
