Minnehaha County Sheriff's Office looking for Dell Rapids copper wire thieves

The Minnehaha County Sheriff's Office is requesting the public's help finding at least two people they believe are involved in the theft of a large amount of copper wiring.

The incident happened at about 4 a.m. Monday, near 475th Avenue and Jasper Street in Dell Rapids. A man called police notifying them of the theft of some "heavy duty" copper wiring, according to Capt. Josh Phillips with the sheriff's office.

The reporting party followed the suspects as they drove off in a white Chevy Silverado with no license plates until he was advised to stop after the passenger in the Chevy pulled a handgun out through the window and took one shot into the air, Phillips said.

The sheriff's office is reviewing surveillance footage in Dell Rapids to identify the suspects. Phillips said they believe the individuals responsible for the copper theft have also been committing similar crimes in neighboring counties.
