Minnesota Elections 2022: Senate District 53

SENATE DISTRICT 53

Matt Klein

  • Age: 54

  • Party: DFL

  • City: Mendota Heights

  • What qualifies you to hold this position? I have served northern Dakota county in the state senate since 2016; before that I served on the West St Paul school board. I work as an Internal Medicine physician at Mayo Clinic, and I am currently the only physician in the state senate. I have sought to bring the voice of science and integrity to my legislative work.

  • What would your top priorities be if elected? 1. Ensuring affordable, quality health care for all Minnesotans. 2. Protecting the right to choose and health care autonomy for women. 3. Lowering property taxes and eliminating the tax on Social Security to offset inflation and help Minnesotans stay in their homes. 4. Addressing climate change by moving Minnesota to a carbon neutral state.

  • Politics has become very divisive in recent years, if elected, what would you do to improve the tone? I’ve developed strong relationships across the aisle in the senate. I know it’s possible to advocate for the values of our community while finding realistic bipartisan solutions. I served on the conference committee for reinsurance last year, a bill which passed in to law with bipartisan support and which has lowered health care insurance premiums.
