Minnesota elections: Add these important dates on your 2024 calendar

We are less than one year out from the 2024 elections. The race to the White House is underway, and it's packing the coming year with lots of dates to remember. To keep them all straight, put these important dates in your calendar.

When is the next presidential election?

The general election is Nov. 5.

But before we get there, Minnesota will hold primaries to help whittle down the candidate list.

The Minnesota primary will be held March 5. Voters will choose between candidates from one of the major parties for president. Pre-registration is open through February 13, and voters can also register at their polling place on the day of the election.

Elections for other offices with a primary, such as congressional seats, will take place on August 13.

How do I register to vote in Minnesota?

Not sure if you're registered? The Secretary of State website allows you to check your status.

Minnesotans can register at their polling place, online or on paper and sent to your county election official. Pre-registration is due 21 days before the general election.

Minnesota has one of the highest voter turnouts in the country with nearly 80% in the 2020 presidential election, 7% of whom registered on Election Day.

What seats will be on the ballot?

Between the presidency and statewide elections with national implications, your 2024 ballot will give you plenty to decide on.

Along with a lineup of city-and county-level races, other races on the ballot may include:

  • Eight seats for the U.S. House of Representatives

  • One U.S. Senate seat

  • 133 state House seats (one special election Dec. 5 2023)

  • Six intermediate appellate court seats

  • Four state Supreme Court seats

No state Senate seats will be on the ballot.

In Minnesota, presidential candidates do not file to be placed on the ballot. If a candidate is not nominated by one of the major political parties, they must file a nominating petition by August 20 along with 2,000 signatures of eligible voters.

Keep an eye on these other important filing deadlines and more state races on the Secretary of State's website.
