Minnesota man identified as victim of fatal Saturday crash in central Black Hills

Sep. 8—HILL CITY, S.D. — A southeastern Minnesota man has been identified as the person who died late Saturday night in a motorcycle crash north of Hill City, South Dakota.

Shortly after 10:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 3, authorities in Pennington County were called to mile marker 96 of U.S. Highway 385, roughly 15 miles north of Hill City, for a report of a single-motorcycle crash.

Preliminary crash information released by the South Dakota Highway Patrol indicates that a 2012 Harley Davidson Touring motorcycle was southbound on U.S. 385 when it crossed the centerline into the northbound lane and hit a guardrail.

Paul Smith, the 72-year-old driver from Zumbrota, Minnesota, was thrown from the motorcycle and was pronounced dead at the scene. He was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash.
