Minnesota officer who fatally shot Black man resigns

Kim Potter, the Minnesota police officer who fatally shot Daunte Wright, a 20-year old Black man who struggled with police after a traffic stop, has resigned.

The police said the weekend shooting in a Minneapolis suburb appeared to be an "accidental discharge" by the officer who drew her gun rather than her Taser…

The 26 year veteran of the force resigned Tuesday, as did the chief of police.

Brooklyn Center Mayor Mike Elliott :

“We want to send a message to the community that we are taking this situation seriously."

Wright was shot on Sunday after being pulled over for what police said was an expired car registration.

Officers then discovered there was a warrant out for his arrest...

and according to former police chief Gannon Monday, the officer accidentally drew her pistol instead of her Taser during a struggle with Wright.

Wright's death ignited two consecutive nights of unrest in Brooklyn Center.

Hundreds of protesters clashed with law enforcement officers outside the city’s police headquarters on Monday in defiance of a curfew ordered by the Governor.

This latest shooting of an unarmed Black man follows a city already on edge with the trial of Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer charged with murdering George Floyd, taking place just a few miles away.

Wright’s family spoke out Tuesday – saying he was kind, liked basketball and worked multiple jobs to support his two-year-old son.

Duante Wright's aunt, Niesha Wright:

“They murdered my nephew. She killed my nephew. // My nephew was 20 years old. I don't care what nobody got to say about him. He was loved. He was ours. He came from us. My brother, and my sister is hurt."

President Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama issued a statement on Tuesday calling for a "full and transparent investigation" following "yet another shooting of a Black man."
