Mishawaka police identify driver from police chase ending in deadly self-inflicted wound

MISHAWAKA — Mishawaka Police have identified the driver who died during a vehicle pursuit on April 9 as 43-year-old Jeremy Knew from Warsaw.

The Tribune previously reported that after Knew dropped off a male and a female passenger at the Canadian National Railway tracks, he sped off north at a high speed into a Knollwood subdivision off of Gumwood Road. He exited the subdivision, heading south, and shot himself in the head, police reported. Knew died at the scene.

Through the investigation, detectives interviewed the two passengers who exited the vehicle before it sped off. They stated that Knew told them to get out of the truck because he "had guns and was not stopping for the police," Mishawaka Police said in a press release.

Police stated that it remains unknown why Knew shot himself. They reported in their press release that, "no Mishawaka Police officers discharged any weapons at any time during the pursuit."

Knew's autopsy was conducted on April 11. The results are pending.
