Big Grove Brewery wants riders on the Register's Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa to ring in the golden anniversary of the river-to-river trek with a golden can and golden jersey.

The 50th edition of RAGBRAI will take riders across the state from Sioux City to Davenport July 23 to 29. Late last year, RAGBRAI launched a promotion where 50 lucky riders won golden jerseys to honor the milestone.

The coveted gold jerseys will not be sold to the public but Big Grove Brewery, which became the official beer sponsor of RAGBRAI in 2019, wants to give riders a second chance to win. So the brewery hid golden cans in 150 Easy Eddy Hazy IPA 12-packs marked with the RAGBRAI L logo.

The first 100 people to find the gold cans will win gold jerseys. The remaining 50 winners will get "Big Grove swag," according to the release.

Instructions on how to redeem them can be found on the golden cans. People also can enter to win a drawing for Big Grove swag by mailing a postcard with the label "Gold Can" to Big Grove Brewery, 1225 S. Gilbert St., Iowa City, IA, 52240, before June 16.

RAGBRAI Director Matt Phippen said the promotion emulates Willy Wonka's golden ticket promotion in the children's classic "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory." Big Grove CEO Matt Swift said in a news release that this is one the "coolest" promotions the company has done since its creation in 2013.

"Big Grove is proudly rooted in Iowa and as an iconic Iowa event, we are happy to support RAGBRAI," Swift said in the release. "We can’t wait for these packs to be out in the market and we're excited for our fans as we get closer to RAGBRAI this summer.”
