Miss Kitty felines seek loving, 'furever' homes

Jun. 12—THOMASVILLE — Cats are like any other creature when homeless. They survive in harsh, dangerous environments in the absence of love and companionship. The Miss Kitty Feline Sanctuary, 425 Covington Ave., is a no-kill safe haven for felines without homes, but the animals need the love and care available in a "furever" home.

On the third Saturday of each month, Miss Kitty residents of all ages and descriptions are at Petsense at Gateway Shopping Center for an adoption event. The June event is this Saturday, June 17, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

"We're going to bring exquisite cats that are highly adoptable and are looking for their forever homes," said Gail West, Miss Kitty volunteer and sanctuary ambassador. "With the community's support, we are able to continue our support and care of injured and abandoned cats."

Guidance will be available at the event to provide the best fit for people adopting cats and for the cats themselves.

West said Miss Kitty personnel at the Saturday event will help ensure a cat is adopted by a compatible family. If someone travels frequently or if a household has dogs or children will be taken into account.

Carol Jones, Miss Kitty executive director, said perhaps someone attending the event might choose to foster a feline.

Miss Kitty now houses primarily adults cat. Kittens go to foster homes, where they receive individual attention, learn to sit on a lap and be stroked and become socialized before being available for adoption, Jones explained.

Miss Kitty provides all supplies to people fostering cats.

Older cats are more settled, Jones said. "They're just happy to be there," she added.

Often, West said, an older person might want to adopt a senior cat. "They can just age together," she explained.

About 150 cats are housed at Miss Kitty, with about 50 — primarily kittens — in foster care.

The adoption fee is $100 for a cat of any age. The fee includes neutering/spaying, all required vaccinations, deworming, testing for feline AIDS and feline leukemia and being microchipped.

"They'll have all the

medical care appropriate for their age," said Jones.
