Missing 66-year-old hiker from Texas found dead in Utah national park, rangers say

A missing 66-year-old hiker from Austin, Texas, was found dead near a trail at a Utah national park, rangers said.

Rangers began searching for a man who was reported overdue from a hike on Aug. 1 at Arches National Park, the National Park Service said in an Aug. 2 news release.

They found the man’s vehicle at the Sand Dune Arch Trail parking lot, rangers said.

Then they discovered his body off-trail, nearby, park officials said. They are investigating the incident.

The Sand Dune Arch Trail takes hikers to a “hidden arch between tall sandstone walls,” according to park officials.

This hike is less than half a mile round trip, and park officials rank it as an “easy” hike that takes about 15 to 30 minutes.

From this trail, hikers can continue onto Broken Arch Loop Trail, which is about 2.3 miles round trip and takes roughly an hour to complete.
