Missing boater found dead after accident in Rutherford County

The body of a 61-year-old man has been found after a search following a boating accident in Rutherford County.

TWRA officials identified the man as Gary Marcel, of Murfreesboro as the victim of an accident that occurred on the West Fork of the Stones River and Percy Priest Lake, the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency announced in a press release Friday.

TWRA officers were notified that the individual was reported missing at about 1 a.m. on Sept. 13.

When they arrived, officers discovered an unoccupied aluminum v-hull boat in the West Fork area of the lake. After a search, officers located the man’s body, downstream of the vessel. He was not wearing a lifejacket.

The incident remains under investigation, according to the TWRA.

It is the 23rd boating-related fatality in Tennessee this year.

It follows a double fatality last weekend, when a man and his 8-year-old son died after their Sea-Doo collided with a barge on Cheatham Lake.
