Boat Story, a new BBC thriller from the duo who created The Missing, has got its first trailer.

Led by Peep Show and Timeless star Paterson Joseph and Breeders' Daisy Haggard (Breeders) – with a supporting cast including The Missing's Tchéky Karyo, The Thick of It's Joanna Scanlan plus former EastEnders stars Craig Fairbrass and Phil Daniels – Boat Story charts the morally dubious discovery of illegal drugs inside a shipwreck.

Joseph and Haggard's unsuspecting duo Samuel and Janet are at the centre of it, and their plight looks both amusing and deadly, judging by the trailer.

A narrator informs us that both Samuel and Janet are recently unemployed, having also lost their families and properties.

"But then, they found this..." the narrator adds, as the stacks of tightly-wrapped narcotics are revealed from beneath the vessel's tarpaulin.

"Are you telling me you can't use a few million quid?!" Samuel asks, with Janet clearly unsure of whether or not to just report their haul to the authorities.

Boat Story's synopsis further teases: "The pair can't believe their luck as they agree to sell it and split the cash.

"But quickly Janet and Samuel find themselves entangled with police, hitmen, and a sharp-suited gangster known as 'The Tailor'."

Back when the six-episode series was first announced, creators Harry and Jack Williams, who previously worked with Karyo on The Missing and its spin-off Baptiste, said: "We loved making The Tourist and Boat Story picks up where that left off — tonally, at least.

"It's a morality tale and a thriller and other things that make it hard to define even though we seem to be attempting to define it.

"It's full of vulnerable, messed-up and eccentric characters, and we've cast some of our favourite actors to play them. We are excited to bring this to life along with our fellow directors."

Boat Story is coming soon to BBC One and BBC iPlayer, with viewers in the US and Germany able to stream via Amazon Freevee.
