Missing dog returns to Maine animal shelter after spending nearly a month on the run

A dog that went missing from an animal shelter in Maine in late April made its way back to the facility this week, officials said.

Nellie, a 2-year-old dane-mastiff mix, had not been seen since was spotted in Scarborough on April 27, according to the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland.

Officials say Nellie returned to the shelter on Monday with an extensive leg wound. She had also lost a “decent amount” of weight.

Nellie did not have any broken bones and she is expected to heal without any issues.

In a Facebook post, officials said, “We could not have done this without the dedication and commitment of our ARLGP team of staff and volunteers. It took 26 days of hanging lost dog posters, tracking sightings, moving game cameras, setting up feeding stations, and spraying scents—most of which happened at sunrise and sunset daily to ensure we made her as comfortable as possible.”

Another announcement will be made when Nellie is ready for adoption.
