Missing Hart's breakfast sandwich? City restaurant to revive the beloved Rochester classic

Nearly five years after it closed, people still lament the loss of Hart’s Local Grocers at 10 Winthrop St. in Rochester’s East End.

They especially lament the loss of Hart’s Signature Breakfast Sandwich: two eggs, sliced avocado, arugula, pancetta, Sriracha mayonnaise and a choice of cheddar, provolone or muenster cheese on a roll, croissant or gluten-free bread.

Recently, Ronnie McClive, co-owner of Petit Poutinerie, 44 Elton St., was involved in a discussion on X (formerly Twitter) about the dearly departed food item, which made her want to bring it back in some form.

Soon Petit Poutinerie will.

Starting at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 3, the restaurant in the city’s Neighborhood of the Arts will serve its version of the Hart’s specialty.

Saturday is sort of a test run, she said.

“I hope it’s not a one-time thing,” she said. “We’ll see how it goes.”

In coming up with a prototype this past week, initially, she worked from the memories and photos of her “ROC Twitter people,” she said.

Then, from deep in his camera roll, Chris Lindstrom (@stromie) unearthed an image of the old Hart’s menu board, which listed the ingredients, and shared it with McClive.

Petit Poutinerie’s version will be two eggs over medium, sliced avocado, arugula, pancetta, Sriracha mayo and cheddar on a soft ciabatta roll from Fairport’s Amazing Grains.

“This is a tribute” and a work in progress, said McClive, adding that she was a big fan of all of Hart’s prepared foods, including the sandwich.

Alone it will cost $12; with fries it will be $15.

“If we can re-create something that people miss, that will be great,” she said.

Petit Poutinerie is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday. For more, go to https://petitpoutinerie.com/.
