Just in time to greet the cold weather, a local comfort food option has returned to the Athens restaurant scene. The I Heart Mac & Cheese franchise location at 165 Hickory St. reopened last week.

Closed for the past three months, the fast casual build-your-own mac & cheese eatery is now under new ownership by the Atlanta-based team of Felker Ward Jr. and Felker Ward III. The first 10 people in line at a grand reopening on Friday received free mac & cheese creations for a full year. The restaurant this week is holding daily raffles where guests can win free meals.

Located under The Mark Athens student housing center, I Heart Mac & Cheese became the Florida-based chain's first Georgia location when it opened in November 2019. In addition to unique menu offerings like Lobster & White Truffle and Short Rib Philly, the Athens franchise became popular due to its late hours of operation that extend to midnight on Fridays and Saturdays.

Guests select a pasta, bread, quinoa, broccoli, cauliflower or tater tot base along with a choice of 10 different proteins, 11 vegetables and nine cheeses (gluten-free, vegan and plant-based options are also available). One of the side options is tomato soup.

The Athens location plans to announce weekly themed specials that will include “Kids Eat Free” Monday nights.
