Without a hint of irony, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov labeled accusations that Russian dictator Vladimir Putin's was involved in the murder of opposition politician Alexei Navalny as "barbaric.”

He was responding to statements made by Navalny's widow, Yulia, that accused Putin of murdering her husband.

Peskov dismissed the accusations as "absolutely unfounded."

"These are absolutely unfounded, barbaric accusations against the head of the Russian state, but given that Yulia Navalnaya became a widow just days earlier, I will leave it without comment," he commented.

Though claiming to have not seen Yulia Navalnaya’s appeal, Peskov was ready to call her accusations "unsupported and unconfirmed."

Earlier, the founder of the Russian human rights project Gulagu.net, Vladimir Osechkin, reported that Navalny's body showed signs of beating.

Navalnaya declared on Feb. 19 that she would "continue the work" of her husband, promising to soon reveal how "Putin killed him."

The Russian Federal Penitentiary Service announced on Feb. 16 that Alexei Navalny had died following a walk in the colony, without specifying the cause of death. The Kremlin announced that Putin had been informed about the politician's death. Navalny's team confirmed his death the following day.

The opposition leader's mother and lawyer had not been allowed into the morgue where his body was held as of Feb. 19.

Navalny was imprisoned in January 2021 after returning to Russia from Germany, where he was treated for Novichok poisoning.

A Russian court in Feb. 2021 sentenced Navalny to 3.5 years in prison in the so-called Yves Rocher case.

Navalny was sentenced in March 2022 to another nine years in prison in a case of fraud and contempt of court. He was sentenced in Aug. 2023 to 19 years in a special regime colony under six articles of “extremism”.

Navalny was transferred in Dec. 2023 to a colony in the village of Kharp in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District, above the Arctic Circle. It is considered a colony “for particularly dangerous repeat offenders” and is characterized by its extremely harsh conditions.
