Missing swimmer identified by Neptune Beach police

The Neptune Beach Police Department released the identity of the man who was reported missing in the ocean on Tuesday night.

Police said Mykhailo Myroshnychenko, 19, was last seen entering the Atlantic Ocean near Lemon Street in Neptune Beach around 8:00 pm while attempting to assist a man and two children who were struggling in a rip current.

The man and children made it safely back to shore, however, Myroshnychenko disappeared.

Crews from NBPD, the Atlantic Beach Police Department, Jacksonville Fire & Rescue Department, Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Aviation Unit, United States Coast Guard, Neptune Beach Ocean Rescue, Atlantic Beach Ocean Rescue, and Jacksonville Beach Ocean Rescue all searched for Myroshnychenko throughout the night, launching an operation near Ahern Street in Atlantic Beach.

Around 2:30 a.m., a member of NBPD found a body floating close to shore near 19th Street in Atlantic Beach.

Police said an official identification has not yet been made, though the body matches the age, sex, race, clothing description, and unique identifiers described as Myroshnychenko. His family has been notified and is in contact with the Duval County Medical Examiners’ Office.
