Mission Trail recognized as 'Best Historical Site' by Texas Travel Awards program

Borderland dignitaries gathered Friday to celebrate the Mission Trail’s “Best Historical Site” award from the Texas Travel Awards.

The Texas Travel Awards program recognizes and celebrates top travel destinations and attractions across the Lone Star State. It is put together by the publishers of Austin Monthly, San Antonio Magazine and Texas Music to highlight the places, businesses and things to explore in the state.

Those in attendance included El Paso Chamber CEO Andrea Hutchins; Socorro city Rep. Rudy Cruz Jr.; Michael Silvas, governor of the 2023 Ysleta del Sur Pueblo Governing Tribal Council; County Commissioner Iliana Holguin; Destination El Paso CEO Jose Garcia; and Shelby McCue of the Mission Trail Association.

The celebration took place at Casa Ortiz, 10167 Socorro Road in Socorro.

The El Paso Mission Trail is a 9-mile historic corridor that connects three of the oldest continuously operated missions in the Southwest and preserves the rich history of the Camino Real. The missions are the Ysleta Mission, the Socorro Mission and San Elizario Chapel.

Earlier this year, San Elizario was also recognized as the “Best Historic Small Town in America” by USA TODAY’s Readers’ Choice Awards for 2023.
