Grand slam lifts Missions to second extra-innings win against Hooks

Highlights: A grand slam by Missions outfielder Daniel Johnson in the 10th inning proved to be the difference in the Hooks' second consecutive extra-innings loss at Whataburger Field. Corpus Christi trailed 6-5 in the ninth before Joey Loperfido ripped a game-tying solo home run. It was the third consecutive game that Loperfido homered for the Hooks, who are now 4-10 this season. Shay Whitcomb and Colin Barber also hit home runs for Corpus Christi and Johnson finished with a game-best five RBI to lead San Antonio.

Highlights: Hooks outfielder Joey Loperfido hit a two-run home run to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth inning, but the Missions tacked on a run in the 10th to secure their third win of the series at Whataburger Field. Loperfido's clutch blast came with two outs as he finished with three hits and drove in four runs to lead Corpus Christi. San Antonio's Juan Fernandez hit a go-ahead RBI single in the 10th to score Tirso Ornelas for the game-winning run.

THURSDAY, APRIL 20

Highlights: The Hooks rallied with runs in the final two innings to pull within one, but the Missions held on to secure a one-run victory at Whataburger Field. Corpus Christi's other runs came in the fourth and sixth innings on a solo home run by C.J. Stubbs and a wild pitch to score Joey Loperfido. Shay Whitcomb hit a solo home run in the eighth to bring the Hooks within two and Kenedy Corona hit an RBI single in the ninth before Jared Koenig got Chad Stevens to strikeout to end the game. San Antonio finished with 10 hits to back starter Duncan Snider, who pitched 4.2 innings with five strikeouts.

Highlights: The Hooks returned to the win column against the Missions on Wednesday behind a offensive barrage from second baseman Luis Santana, outfielder Kenedy Corona and a strong performance from starting pitcher Aaron Brown. Santana homered and drove in four of the Hooks' seven runs and Corona went deep for the second consecutive night as Corpus Christi captured its fourth win of the season. Brown pitched five innings, allowing one run with three strikeouts and limited San Antonio hitters to one hit. The Hooks never trailed after scoring three runs in the third inning and added four more in the eighth.

TUESDAY, APRIL 18

MISSIONS 3, HOOKS 1 (10 INNINGS)

Hooks: Scott Schreiber 1-4; Chad Stevens 1-3; Kenedy Corona 1-4, HR, RBI, R; Blair Henley 5 IP, 4 H, BB, 6 K.

Missions: Pedro Castellanos 3-5, 2B; Tirso Ornelas 3-5, RBI, R; Connor Hollis 3-5, 2B, RBI, R.

Highlights: The Hooks took a 1-0 lead into the ninth inning, but the Missions tied the game on a wild pitch by Julio Robaina to force extra innings. Connor Hollis hit an RBI double and Tirso Ornelas connected on an RBI single in the 10th to give San Antonio the lead and ultimately the win to claim the series opener between the two teams at Whataburger Field. Kenedy Corona supplied Corpus Christi's only run on a solo home run in the seventh inning.
