Will Mississippi Coast schools be open Wednesday? What we know about our districts

All Mississippi Coast secondary schools canceled classes on Tuesday, citing the expected arrival of freezing temperatures and possibility of precipitation. While the threat of rain is over, according to National Weather Service forecasters, temperatures Wednesday morning are expected to be in the low-to-mid 20s across the Coast, with wind chills as low as 11 in the early-morning hours.

Here is a list of local districts and schools and their plans for Wednesday classes.

Bay St. Louis-Waveland School District: Regular schedule Wednesday. In a note to parents, the district said “School resumes as usual tomorrow, Wednesday, Jan. 17. Bundle up warmly, and rest assured that we’re taking every measure to ensure our buses run on schedule for the safety of our students.”

Biloxi Public School District: Regular schedule Wednesday. In a note to parents, the district said “We will resume classes Wednesday, Jan. 17, on our normal schedule.”

Diocese of Biloxi: No announcement on Tuesday of Wednesday plans.

Grace Baptist Academy: No announcement on Tuesday of Wednesday plans. In Tuesday’s closing note, said “We expect to resume our normal schedule on Wednesday.”

Gulfport School District: Regular Wednesday schedule. In a note to parents, the district said “Gulfport Schools will be back on normal schedule tomorrow, Wednesday, Jan. 17. Dress warm! The soccer and basketball games that were originally scheduled for today have been rescheduled for tomorrow (Wednesday) evening.”

Hancock County School District: Delayed start Wednesday. In a note to parents, the district said “To ensure student safety, Hancock County School District will start one hour later than normal. This will allow our transportation department to ensure all buses are running properly and students are not waiting in the extreme cold. Remember that students have free dress tomorrow. Start times are 8:30 a.m. for elementary, 9:15 a.m. for middle school and 9:10 for the high school.”

Harrison County School District: Regular schedule on Wednesday. In a note to parents, the district said “School will be back in session on Wednesday, Jan. 17. Our campuses will open at normal times.”

Holy Trinity Catholic School: Regular schedule on Wednesday. In a note to parents, the district said “HTCS will return to school with regular scheduled time for check-in tomorrow. Students will be allowed to wear free dress. Warm layers with sweat pants or jeans are recommended. No pajamas, shorts or jeans with holes. We encourage everyone to dress appropriately for cold weather.”

Jackson County School District: Regular schedule Wednesday. In a note to parents, the district said “Jackson County School District will return to school tomorrow, Jan. 17, with normal start times. Dress warm because it will be cold.”

Long Beach School District: Regular schedule Wednesday. In a note to parents, the district said “Based on recommendations from Harrison County Emergency Management, all Long Beach School District schools and offices will be open and resume regular schedules on Wednesday, Jan. 17. Please remember to dress your Bearcats warmly for the cold weather.”

Moss Point School District: Regular schedule Wednesday. In a note to parents, the district said “Moss Point School District will resume school at regular scheduled hours tomorrow, Wednesday, Jan. 17. All after school and athletic activities will go as scheduled and the Boys and Girls Club will be opened. The January School Board Meeting will begin at 5:30 pm.”

Nativity BVM School: No announcement on Tuesday of Wednesday plans. In a note announcing Tuesday’s closure, said “Stay safe and warm and we will see you on Wednesday.”

Ocean Springs School District: Regular schedule Wednesday. In a note to parents, the district said “OSSD will return to its normal school schedule on Wednesday, Jan. 17. Our buildings have been cleared to return and all facilities will open tomorrow at normal time and will be 100% operational.” Additionally, the district reported that OSHS soccer and basketball games originally scheduled for this afternoon have been moved to tomorrow.

Our Lady Academy: Regular schedule Wednesday. In a note to parents, the academy said “We will have normal check-in time and be on a regular schedule for tomorrow. Students may wear sweat pants or jeans with an appropriate shirt or sweatshirt. No jeans with holes, pajama pants, slippers, or blankets. Dress appropriate for cold temperatures. Warm layers are encouraged.”

Pascagoula-Gautier School District: Regular schedule Wednesday. In a note to parents, the district said “PGSD schools will resume regular classes on Wednesday, Jan. 17. Parents, please ensure students dress warmly.”

Pass Christian School District: Regular schedule Wednesday. In a note to parents, the district said “Schools will be open Wedneday, Jan. 17.”

St. Alphonsus Catholic School: Regular Wednesday schedule. In a note to parents, the school said “School will resume tomorrow, Wednesday, Jan. 17. We will have regular early care and aftercare hours. Don’t forget that tomorrow is a 2 p.m. dismissal day.”

Saint Stanislaus High School: No announcement on Tuesday of Wednesday plans. In a note announcing Tuesday’s closure, said “Classes will resume on Wednesday, Jan. 17.”

Higher education

Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College: Regular schedule Wednesday. The school said “MGCCC will return to normal operations Wednesday, Jan. 17.

University of Southern Mississippi: No announcement yet of Wednesday plans. In a note announcing Tuesday’s closure, said “Classes and normal operations will resume Wednesday, Jan. 17, as scheduled.

William Carey University: Delayed start Wednesday. The school said “All WCU locations (Hattiesburg, Tradition, and Baton Rouge) will open at 10 a.m. tomorrow, Wednesday, Jan. 17.”
