Mississippi man dies after two-vehicle crash in Sumter County

A Mississippi man died after a two-vehicle crash Tuesday night in Sumter County, according to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency.

Emanuel Hernandez, 19, of Meridian, Mississippi, was critically injured when the 2021 Honda Civic he was driving collided head-on with the 2022 Freightliner tractor-trailer driven by Amit Kumar, 40, of Norwalk, California.

Troopers said Hernandez was not using a seat belt at the time of the crash and was ejected from his vehicle.

Hernandez was airlifted to the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, Mississippi, for treatment. On Wednesday, Hernandez succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.

The crash occurred around 6:50 p.m. on Interstate 59 near the 24 mile marker, about 7 miles north of Livingston, in Sumter County.

No further information was provided. Troopers with ALEA's Highway Patrol Division are investigating.
