Biloxi native and Hollywood producer Angela Guice will have to wait until next year to see if her NuContext production company will win its second Emmy or its work on the aftershow for Hulu's popular show "Only Murders in the Building."

The ongoing writers and actors strike forced the Television Academy to hold off presenting the 75th Emmy Awards until Jan. 15, 2024.

NuContext’s Emmy nomination recognizes its work on the aftershow of Hulu’s "Only Murders in the Building" episode titled "One Killer Question."

In May, NuContext won the Producers Guild Award for Outstanding Short Form Program for "One Killer Question."

Guice counts herself among the legion of fans of the popular Hulu "Only Murders in the Building" series and called producing the aftershow “a career highlight” in the 23 years she’s spent in the entertainment business.

Her company’s first Emmy was in 2019 for Outstanding Brand Image Campaign for Dreamworks International Women’s Day campaign, “She-Ra and the Princesses of Power.”

'Only Murders in the Building' aftershow

Only Murders in the Building is a comedy-drama mystery about murders in a Manhattan apartment building and stars Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez. Merle Streep and Paul Rudd joined the show in its third season, which began streaming in June.

NuContext casts all of the celebrity talent for season one of the aftershow, which airs weekly and features guest stars who tackle the unfolding whodunit clues.

“We got together all the amazing celebrity guests that sit down after (the) episode airs for a recap and inside look at the show,” Guice said. “We are really excited we got to partner with Hulu to bring their creative vision to life.”

The Hollywood actors and writers strike started in May and has slowed things down for the entertainment industry, including Guice's company.

“Because our work is dependent on promoting television shows and movies, we haven’t been able to do much since the strike began,” she said. “We’re all hoping that everybody reaches a fair deal as soon as possible.”

Guice said, “We were very lucky to get the new season done before the strike happened.”

There is a silver lining to the slowdown, she said.

“I get to spend a lot of time with my two-year-old and have a lot of great family time,” Guice said.

Guice’s husband Mikael Tyrsen is a film director.

How it started

Guice moved to Los Angeles in 2000, "with basically everything I owned in my Nissan Maxima,” and some inspiration sparked by Sherry Lansing, the pioneering studio executive.

The next day writer David Sheffield, a family friend from Biloxi, invited her to attend the premiere of "Nutty Professor 2," which Sheffield wrote.

He introduced her to Mary Turner, yet another Mississippian in Hollywood, who was working at a production company that needed an assistant to work overnight. Guice took the job and began learning the ropes, working with clients such as Lifetime and the USA Network.

When the owner decided to close the company Guice opened her own creative agency and production company in 2006 with a $3,000 loan.

Family creative connections

She also had some family connections to the creative work. Guice’s father, Reed Guice, is a longtime advertising executive in Biloxi, so to Angela, the commercial and promotional work, “felt like family to me growing up,” she said.

Guice has six full-time employees at NuContext and for large projects she oversees crews of up to 100 people. Major clients include ABC, Hulu, Disney, Netflix, Dreamworks, Fox and BET.

Guice’s roster of clients also includes movie studios, ad agencies, celebrities, influencers, musicians and music labels, and streaming entertainment companies.

“We promote TV shows and branded content around those shows," she said. "We just did a huge campaign for the Oscars and ABC.”

NuContext also helped launch the Kardashians' new show on Hulu.

Father and daughter collabs

Guice still collaborates with her father on projects for Mississippi Power among other clients.

“We love working together on any amazing projects that come way,” she said.

Besides getting to visit her Biloxi family, the work lets Guice bring her experience in the California market back home to South Mississippi.

“I love hiring local crews and to bring a more cutting-edge aesthetic of commercial filming and implement that in the local market,” she said.

Reed Guice said, “I had hopes that some of my children would join me in the family business, and Angela has done that in a very large way. She’s holding it down in Los Angela but we do get a chance to work together. We’re proud of the work we’ve done together for Mississippi Power. It’s a real thrill to watch her succeed as she has.”

Reed Guice said his son Wade is “a very gifted woodworker” and son Breton, a high school senior, will attend the University of Southern Mississippi next year majoring in communications.
