Mississippi rapper Afroman is officially running for president.

The entertainer, who once landed himself in hot water for punching a woman at a Biloxi concert, filed the paperwork required to run for POTUS on April 18, according to TMZ.

Afroman was born in Los Angeles but grew up in South Mississippi. He returned to Hattiesburg in 1998 and released the hit “Because I Got High” in 2000. It was the most successful track on his album, “The Good Times,” released on T-Bones Records out of the Hub City.

“Because I Got High” was nominated for Best Rap Solo Performance at the 2002 Grammy Awards but lost to Missy Elliott’s “Get Ur Freak On.”

It’s been 23 years since Afroman’s hit song about marijuana catapulted him to fame, but weed is still important to the rapper. Afroman says on his campaign website his top priority is to decriminalize cannabis use.

Afroman’s other priorities include:

  • Criminal justice reform

  • Law enforcement reform

  • Halt of all foreign aid

  • Reparations for Black Americans affected by slavery

  • Unity, love and peace

  • Legalization of prostitution

  • More sports celebrations

Afroman said that reparations will come from the $61.9 billion saved by stopping foreign aid and decriminalizing marijuana.

“We need a candidate that is truly elected by the people, and for the people,” said Jason Savage, Afroman’s campaign manager. “We need a man that can step up and lead with a firm hand. The people are starved for a Commander in Chief, that leads from a place of love and not hate. In these dark times, we need a leader that truly embodies the American dream.”

Afroman is running as an independent and could face heavyweight challengers, including President Joe Biden. Republican Donald Trump, who was recently arrested on multiple counts of fraud, has also announced his candidacy.
