NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Mississippi State basketball's quest for its first SEC Tournament title since 2009 has reached perhaps the toughest crossroad this season. MSU, the tournament's No. 9 seed, faces No. 1-seeded Alabama on Friday in the quarterfinals.
A win would put Mississippi State in the semifinals for the first time since 2010. It would also eliminate any doubt lingering about MSU's March Madness hopes.
The Bulldogs entered the conference tournament sitting on the bubble. However, with Thursday's overtime win against No. 8 seed Florida, most projections feature MSU in the field. According to ESPN's Joe Lunardi, Mississippi State likely locked up a spot after defeating the Gators.
A Quadrant 1 win against the nation's No. 5 team would put Mississippi State in a spot to worry about seeding instead of getting in.
MSU is 0-2 against Alabama this season. State opened SEC play on Dec. 28 with a home loss against the Crimson Tide. MSU had a chance at winning the rematch in Tuscaloosa on Jan. 25 but lost 66-63.
