Mississippi State football score vs Auburn: Live updates after Bryan Harsin firing, John Cohen AD switch

STARKVILLE — Mississippi State football coach Mike Leach says he ignores ironies and storylines heading into matchups, but his team's upcoming game is filled with drama.

MSU (5-3, 2-3 SEC) welcomes Auburn (3-5, 1-4) into Davis Wade Stadium on Saturday (6:30 p.m., ESPN2). The matchup comes in the shadows of athletics director John Cohen leaving Mississippi State for Auburn. It also comes after Auburn fired coach Bryan Harsin on Monday and named Carnell "Cadillac" Williams interim coach.

In the middle of it all, two teams desperate for a win take the field.

HOT BOARD:Six candidates who could replace John Cohen

Mississippi State, off an open date, is looking to snap a two-game losing streak. MSU closed October with a loss at Kentucky before losing at Alabama. Auburn has lost four straight since its win against Missouri on Sept. 24.

When these two matched up last season in Auburn, Mississippi State overcame a 28-3 deficit and won 43-34.

John Cohen becomes Auburn athletics director

Mississippi State will be hosting its first football game since Cohen's departure. Compliance director Bracky Brett is serving as interim AD while Mississippi State runs a national search for Cohen's replacement.

It's unclear if Cohen will be in attendance Saturday, but Leach appears to have no lingering hard feelings.

"John was great," Leach said Monday. "I got along good with John."

"I'll speak to him any time he's around," Leach later added.
