Mississippi State University stabbing suspect identified, charged

Dec. 12—STARKVILLE — The Mississippi State University Police Department has charged a man with felony assault and child endangerment following a stabbing of a university employee on campus Monday afternoon.

A MSU Maroon Alert was sent out around 3:50 p.m. on Dec. 11 asking people to be on the alert and avoid the area around Herbert Hall. University communications director Sid Salter said the stabbing took place inside a car outside the dormitory and that the victim, a female university employee and the suspect knew each other.

Moments later, campus police had Gavin Sudduth, 38, of Starkville, in custody. He was taken to the Oktibbeha County Jail and formally charged with aggravated domestic assault and child endangerment, because the female victim's four children were in the car at the time.

It is not known if Sudduth has had an initial court appearance to set bond.

In May 2022, Philadelphia police charged Sudduth with aggravated assault after shots were fired by a man walking down a city street at another man. Sudduth was arrested a short time later. He and the victim had filed police reports against each other in the weeks prior to the shooting.
