Missouri girls basketball team with 81-game winning streak leads weekend event at Mercy
A battle between two nationally ranked girls basketball teams is the highlight of this weekend’s Raatz Fence/O’Shea’s Basketball Classic at Mercy Academy.
The two-day event will tip off Friday with two games starting at 6 p.m. Seven games are scheduled for Saturday, starting at 11 a.m.
Saturday’s 3 p.m. game will match Sacred Heart against St. Louis Incarnate Word. Sacred Heart (16-2) is ranked No. 12 in the nation by ESPN.com and features one of the nation’s top sophomores in ZaKiyah Johnson.
Incarnate Word (13-0) is ranked No. 15 in the nation by ESPN.com and will enter Friday’s game against Mercy with an 81-game winning streak. Senior Natalie Potts, a 6-foot-2 power forward, has signed with Nebraska. Senior Brooke Coffey, a 6-1 guard, has signed with Illinois State. The Red Knights have won five straight Missouri Class 6 state championships.
The field includes nine of the top 10 teams in the Kentucky High School Basketball Media Poll — No. 1 Sacred Heart, No. 2 Manual, No. 3 Cooper, No. 4 George Rogers Clark, No. 5 McCracken County, No. 6 Mercy, No. 7 Ryle, No. 9 Anderson County and No. 10 Bowling Green.
