Missouri man arrested near Floydada after admitting to killing his wife

FLOYDADA — A Missouri man was arrested in connection with a homicide there after he flagged down the Floydada police chief Wednesday and told the officer he had shot his wife.

Keith Bass II, 48, of Excelsior Springs, Missouri, was taken into custody by the Floyd County Sheriff's Office early Wednesday afternoon and transported to the Hale County Jail in Plainview on a charge of first degree murder, the Floyd County Record initially reported.

Floydada Police Chief Reuben Ramon told the Avalanche-Journal that he was responding to a report of a hay bale blocking the roadway just south of town on U.S. 62 when Bass flagged him down and allegedly confessed to Ramon, "I just murdered my wife." Bass apparently told Ramon he had found his wife lying with another man and shot both of them. During the encounter, Bass was in possession of a holstered firearm, which was apparently used in the alleged murder, according to Ramon.

Bass indicated he immediately fled Missouri and was on his way to a friend's house in Lubbock, but turned himself in to the first police officer he saw along the way, wanting to know if his wife was alive. Ramon ran the man's information and found he had a murder warrant for his arrest.

Ramon called Sheriff Paul Raissez, who took the man into custody. Bass' Jeep, which did not have a license plate attached at the time of the encounter, was impounded. Bass chose not to fight extradition and will be picked up in Plainview by Clay County, Missouri officials, Ramon said.

The Excelsior Springs Police Department received a call for service at 12:11 a.m. Wednesday regarding a shooting at a residence near North Main and Grand, according to information provided by the department. Police said officers found two apparent gunshot victims on the front porch, an adult male and female, who were both transported to an area hospital.

According to the police department, the female was pronounced dead around 12:35 a.m. Wednesday. The male was last listed in critical condition.
